I have been around in IT since more than 25 years, in different areas, roughly the past 10 years of it as DevOps engineer.
DevOps is wonderful, especially when working in the Unix & Linux world. I specialized at a time in Puppet, and have written a few articles about it, like here , here and here.
What DevOps really is about is automating things in the software supply chain to make things robust and reliable. Good processes need to be in place, and we do not want to waste time creating documentations and blogs the “good old fashioned way”, but by processing code. This includes diagrams and stuff like that either.
One of the challenges is that almost every other day a new technology is popping up, being almost certainly “world leading” from day one and the most important thing ever. And one is supposed to know it all on expert level.
For me, the answer was to build my own cloud online with all the supporting technologies, like gitlab, jenkins, sonarqube, databases, and stuff like that. Originally running all on virtual machines at cloud provides, I have decided to finally move to Kubernetes as container platform. It is so much easier to have all those little helping gizmos running and do their stuff there. So migrating to Kubernetes is gonna be focus of the next few articles here.
The process of migration is quite a bit, and I’ll cover my steps here in the blog for my own documentation, as well as saving others potentially much time. I did even create a profile on X, formerly Twitter, so if you want to keep up, please feel free to subscribe there.
